Discovering a 3,000-year-old city with paintings “identical to Plato’s” story of “Atlantis”
A documentary series revealed that he may have found “Atlantis” after the discovery of an ancient city 200 feet underground containing drawings that appear to match Plato’s description.
The Greek philosopher described the legendary island for the first time in his texts “Timaeus” and “Critius”, saying that it was a hostile naval force that surrounded “ancient Athens.”
In the story, Athena was able to resist the Atlantic attack, unlike any other country in the world at the time, and it is assumed that it testifies to the superiority of ancient Greece. The legend concludes with the fall of Atlantis to the favor of the gods and sinks underwater.
Thousands of years ago historians devoted their lives to finding Atlantis, and none of them succeeded.
But the Discovery Channel revealed how a spectacular breakthrough could change that, during the new episode of the “Blowing Up History” series.
“Archaeologists have discovered Akrotiri buried under 200 feet of earth, an ancient city more than 3000 years old. At its height, its narrow streets were intricately paved with stones and its square was surrounded by picturesque houses three to four stories high,” the narrator explained.
“A group of colored stones adorn the facades. The rubble is now protected by a high-tech roof that provides a controllable indoor climate,” he added.
“The ruins indicate a very advanced civilization that has flourished here for thousands of years before its abrupt end.”
The series went on to reveal how Akrotiri was subjected to a volcanic eruption, as described by Plato.
She added, “A volcanic eruption creates a huge cloud 20 miles high, spewing ash into Egypt, 200 miles away.
Ancient writers described how the ash cloud plunged the world into darkness, causing a global winter for two years. A cloud of ash 200 feet thick covered the entire island.
The narrator said, “When the empty volcano collapsed into the water, it changed the shape of the island forever.”
More than 3,000 years later, contemporary archaeologists are researching ancient society. The narrator noted: “The eruption of Santorini in 1650 BC destroyed all life on the island and wiped out an entire civilization. The ruins kept by the volcanic ash provide a glimpse of this lost civilization. The walls are adorned with beautiful frescoes depicting local life by the sea.”
And in 360 BC, the Greek philosopher Plato recorded the myth, the story of an advanced civilization destroyed by the gods for their arrogance.
Since Akrotiri’s discovery in the mid-nineteenth century, many scholars have claimed that Santorini is the legendary lost island of Atlantis.
It is remarkable that the paintings discovered by archaeologists depict a society similar to the one described by Plato.
The narrator continued, “Evidence of the connection can be found in the stunning frescoes that adorn the walls of every home. These vibrant paintings depict a paradise full of colors, flowers, and exotic animals … they are evidence of a rich and highly developed civilization. Their sudden disappearance leads many to believe that Santorini is.” The Lost Island of Atlantis.
