أعلن القائم بأعمال وزير الدفاع الأمريكي كريستوفر ميللر، أن واشنطن قررت سحب حاملة الطائرات التابعة للبحرية الوحيدة العاملة في الشرق الأوسط إلى البلاد.

وتأتي هذه الخطوة بعد أن نقل سلاح الجو الأمريكي قاذفتين من طراز B-52 من قاعدة مينوت الجوية في نورث داكوتا إلى الشرق الأوسط. وقال مسؤولون عسكريون إنه كان يهدف إلى تحذير إيران من شن هجمات ضد القوات أو المصالح الأمريكية وردعها عن تنفيذ هجمات انتقامية لاغتيال قائد فيلق القدس الإيراني قاسم سليماني.

تتمركز حاملة الطائرات “يو إس إس نيميتز”، وهي حاملة الطائرات الأمريكية الوحيدة في الشرق الأوسط في منطقة الخليج والمحيط الهندي منذ يونيو 2020، بعد انطلاقها من سان دييغو في مايو.

وكانت القيادة المركزية للقوات المسلحة الأمريكية “CENTCOM”، أعلنت في بيان، أنها نقلت إلى الشرق الأوسط طائرتين من نوع “B-52H” انطلقتا من قاعدة ماينوت في ولاية داكوتا الشمالية “للتشديد على تمسك الولايات المتحدة بالأمن الإقليمي وعرض القدرة الفريدة من نوعها على النشر الفوري للقوة القتالية الساحقة”، دون ذكر موقع مرابطة القاذفتين.
