تسببت موجة الحرارة المرتفعة وهبوب الرياح في أستراليا في اندلاع أكثر من 100 حريق في المساحات الخضراء عبر البلاد خلال الأيام الأخيرة، ويجد رجال الإطفاء صعوبة في السيطرة عليها.

وخلفت هذه الحرائق خلال اليومين الأخيرين خسائر في الممتلكات في كل من غرب سيدني وفي وايتهيفن وفي فولكنبريدج ساوث وفي غابات نيو ساوث ويلز وفي كوينزلاند وغيرها. وما زالت فرق الإطفاء تكافح من أجل السيطرة على 60 حريقا آخرا على الأقل. في جزيرة فريزر لوحدها التهمت النيران 74 ألف هكتار وألحقت أضرارا بالنشاط السياحي في المنطقة.

وبالتزامن مع ذلك، اضطرت السلطات الأسترالية أمام ارتفاع مخاطر اندلاع النيران في المساحات الخضراء بسبب موجة الحر غير العادية، حيث ارتفعت درجات الحرارة في بعض المناطق إلى ما بين 40 درجة مئوية و48 درجة مئوية، اضطرت إلى إغلاق معظم الحظائر والمتنزهات الوطنية في جميع أنحاء نيو ساوث ويلز، وإلى إجلاء سكان عدة مناطق، في قرار وقائي من أجل أمنهم وسلامتهم.
